Yesterday Is Here To Stay

A special thanks to my mother and father-in-law for making Yesterday here to stay.

When Sydney was born I didn't know many baby songs beyond Rock-A-Bye Baby or Jack & Jill so I used to sing her one of the only melodies I knew:  Yesterday by the Beatles.  Every night I put her to sleep I'd rock her on my shoulder and sing that song, sometimes singing verses over and over again until she fell asleep.

The lyrics of Yesterday are about a break-up and it's probably not much of a baby song but it was the only simple ballad I felt like I could sing to her, especially with my lack of singing prowess.

Deep down inside I always hoped she would remember me singing that song to her as she got older but one can never tell what kids will remember.

The other night Randa and the kids were down at her parents house while I was home cutting the grass, and when they got home both kids had music boxes that their Bubby and Pop had found in storage and given to them.

And wouldn't you know it, the music box they gave Sydney played Yesterday.  She's been listening to her new music box while laying in bed for the past couple of nights.

It's been a few years since I sang that song to her at bedtime but tonight she came downstairs and asked me to rock her and sing Yesterday.

Maybe she does remember.

Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away
Now it looks as though they’re here to stay
Oh, I believe in yesterday
Suddenly, I’m not half the man I used to be
There’s a shadow hanging over me.
Oh, yesterday came suddenly
Why she had to go I don’t know she wouldn’t say
I said something wrong, now I long for yesterday
Yesterday, love was such an easy game to play
Now I need a place to hide away
Oh, I believe in yesterday
Why she had to go I don’t know she wouldn’t say
I said something wrong, now I long for yesterday
Yesterday, love was such an easy game to play
Now I need a place to hide away
Oh, I believe in yesterday
Mm mm mm mm mm mm mm
